BBNYA TOUR | Sorrow’s Forest by Kaitlyn Corvus

Title: SORROW’S FOREST

Author: KAITLYN CORVUS

Released: 15TH JULY 2022

Genre: URBAN FANTASY

REP: LGBT+  | TWs: Homophobia

I have recently come to to love horror and urban fantasy reads, so I was really looking forward to this novel. I enjoyed that the forest nearly seemed to have a mind of its own and was irreversibly intertwined with Sorrow herself, as we learn more through the story. However, I felt the overall story was disjointed and at times didn’t make a lot of sense. Mackie wasn’t an easy character to empathise with as it felt a big part of his persona was held back constantly. Blue was interesting, but again it felt as if a lot of details around him were secret, as well.

The ‘devils’ of the forest were akin to evil faeries, so I did enjoy that and would have loved to delve more into the details around them. They were my favourite part of Sorrow’s Forest because they seemed to have charisma that the rest of the characters lacked. I also felt a few of the scenes could have been cut to the betterment of the story – almost as if they were there to build sympathy for the main characters, but underdeveloped and detracted from the story in the end.

I am hoping the next installation answers my questions and brings it to more of a close, so I’ll be picking it up when I can.

Sorrow’s Forest is a THREE STAR read for me. Thank you to BBNYA Tours and TheWriteReads for allowing me to take part. I am reviewing this read voluntarily.

Sorrow’s Forest teems with beasts, some ugly, some beautiful, all unnatural. A ban restricts travel beneath her branches, existing for as long as Lakeview Township has, and most who disobey do not return.

To win a bet, twelve-year-old Mackie King enters the forest, and in its depths, he discovers a boy-like devil. Then he steals him from the trees.

In as little as an hour, the devil names himself Blue and fits seamlessly into the Kings’ life. No one seems to remember he wasn’t always there. Only Mackie knows the truth.

Now, Mackie and Blue are grown, Queen Sorrow has awakened, and she wants her devil back. She’s willing to tear the town apart to reclaim him. Mackie has always been resourceful, but it will take every bit of ingenuity he and Blue possess to thwart Queen Sorrow and her minions, save the town, and free themselves from the shadow of the bittering forest.
